Association Between Epidural Labor Analgesia and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Offspring: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Listen, folks, we’ve got a lot of people talking about Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and epidural labor analgesia (ELA), the best way to handle labor pain, believe me. So, we did this huge meta-analysis, really terrific work, to get to the bottom of it. We found hundreds of studies, but only seven made the cut – the best ones, obviously.

Now, the women who got ELA, they had a slightly higher risk of having kids with ASD. We’re talking an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.12. That’s a small number, but it’s there, and it’s from seven top-notch studies. We even did a check, removed one study, and the risk was still there, aHR of 1.09. Very consistent, very strong.

And we did all sorts of checks – with siblings, C-sections, different kinds of births. The numbers don’t lie, folks. The risk is modest, but it’s there. Now, I’m not saying it’s a big risk, but we can’t ignore it. It’s like when you build a building, you’ve got to pay attention to every brick, right?

But let’s be clear, the evidence, it’s not the best quality. We need more studies, better studies to really figure this out. We’re going to keep looking into it, find out more about this risk, and how we can make things better. That’s what we do, we make things better. We’re going to get to the bottom of this, and we’re going to do it bigly.
