Listen up, folks, we’ve got something big here. We’re talking about mild traumatic brain injury, mTBI. It’s huge, it’s everywhere, and let me tell you, the recovery? It’s unpredictable. But we’ve got this incredible thing, IGF-1, it’s like a miracle worker for the brain, helps it grow, repair, you name it. But the studies? Not enough, not yet. So, we did something fantastic. We took a look at IGF-1 and how it links up with brainpower in mTBI patients. And we did it with style, using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, a real brain teaser.
We had a lot of people, 295 with mTBI and 200 healthy ones, a great group. We checked everything – who they are, how they got hurt, and those IGF-1 levels. And the brain games, the WCST, we had them play that. We crunched the numbers, correlations, regressions, the whole nine yards. And guess what? We found some big differences between the mTBI folks and the healthy ones, especially in the ladies and how much school they had.
Turns out, falls and car accidents, they’re the big culprits for mTBI. And those mTBI people, their brains didn’t do as well on the tests, except for one part, the “Learning to Learn” – they nailed that. But here’s the kicker: IGF-1 levels, they’re tied up with how well the brain works, especially on tough stuff like thinking on your feet and solving problems.
Our fancy models showed that IGF-1, age, and how much school you had, they all play a part in how your brain bounces back. So, we’re onto something huge here, folks. IGF-1 could be the key to predicting how well you recover after mTBI. We’re making brains great again, one protein at a time!
