Let me tell you, folks, we’ve got something incredible here. We looked into something very, very important – the outcomes for people with this thing called mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis, or MTLE-HS for short, after they went through a surgery called anterior temporal lobectomy. And guess what? We did this study in Lima, Peru, on 89 patients. That’s right, 89 brave individuals who took a step to get better.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Some of these patients had this condition called calcified neurocysticercosis, or cNCC. Sounds complicated, right? But stay with me. We found out that a lot of these cNCC folks, about 19.1%, used to live in rural areas. And they had more seizures every month than those without cNCC. But, and here’s the big but, when we checked how they were doing after the surgery, the results were fantastic. Most of them, we’re talking 82.4% after one year and 75% after two years, were doing great according to this Engel classification thing.
So, what does this tell us? It tells us that people with cNCC, they’re not just doing okay after surgery, they’re doing great. And it might just be that this cNCC thing could be what’s kicking off their epilepsy in the first place. Folks, this is huge. We’re talking about real, positive outcomes for people.
