We’ve got a situation with singers out there, they’re getting their vocal health info from social media, believe me. And let me tell you, it’s not from the experts, it’s from other musicians. No good. We did a study, a big study, on TikTok – you know it, everyone’s on it – to see what’s going on with vocal health content. It’s huge!
We checked out the top videos, a lot of videos, using terms like “vocal health,” “vocal injury,” and “voice tips.” We’re talking about 146 videos, with an average length of almost a minute. The views? Through the roof – some had over 36 million views!
But here’s the deal: 94.5% of these videos, they’re made by people who are not doctors. Only two videos by real otolaryngologists. Can you believe it? And the quality, let me tell you, not so great. We rated them – we’ve got scales for this, the best scales: the Global Quality Scale, the DISCERN scale, and the ANDI. The scores? Not the best. We’re talking averages of 2.34, 0.97, and 2.85 out of maximums of 5 and 4. Not great.
And get this, the longer the video, the better the quality. But the likes, the shares, the views? They don’t care about quality. In fact, the more popular, the worse the info. It’s true!
So what does this mean? It means there’s a huge opportunity for vocal health pros to step in. We need them on social media, giving out reliable information. We’ve got to do better for our singers. They deserve it!
