In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots twinkle like stars in the night sky, patients often turn to these digital Santas for answers. But, oh my, how do these clever little helpers fare when it comes to explaining the delicate differences between “palliative care,” “supportive care,” and “hospice care”?
In a workshop not so far away, three AI chatbots—ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing Chat, and Google Bard—were put to the test by six incognito palliative care physicians. These jolly judges scored our AI friends on accuracy, comprehensiveness, and reliability, with a sprinkle of readability, using a scale where 10 is as delightful as a perfectly decorated Christmas tree.
ChatGPT, with a twinkle in its algorithm, scored a merry 9.1 for accuracy, while Bard and Bing Chat followed with 8.7 and 8.2, respectively. When it came to being thorough, ChatGPT jingled all the way with an 8.7, leaving Bard at 8.1 and Bing Chat trailing with a 5.6. Reliability was a bit like guessing who’s been naughty or nice, with Bing Chat topping the list at 7.1, ChatGPT at a modest 6.3, and Bard needing a bit more elf training at 3.2.
But, oh, the blizzards we faced! Bard, in a moment of confusion, suggested supportive care could aim for a cure—like mistaking a reindeer for a unicorn! And Bing Chat, bless its circuits, forgot to mention the importance of interdisciplinary teams, like leaving out the cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.
The references provided by our AI helpers were as unpredictable as a snowstorm in July, and the readability was like trying to read a Christmas list written in the snow. It seems these AI chatbots need a bit more magic to meet the levels that patient educational materials require.

Further research is needed to ensure that when patients ask for guidance, they receive information as reliable as Rudolph’s red nose.
