Awake Brain Surgery: We’re Doing Great Things, Tremendous Things!
Listen folks, we’ve got two fantastic techniques for awake brain surgery, and we’re comparing them – it’s huge. We’ve got the asleep-awake (AA) and the monitored anesthesia care (MAC). The AA is a classic, but MAC, let me tell you, it’s less invasive, no tubes down your throat, it’s just great.
Our goal? To see which one is the best, the top, the most incredible for our patients at Miguel Servet University Hospital. We looked at surgeries from 2013 to 2022 – a big study, a lot of data, very impressive.
Here’s the deal: 79 patients, some with AA, some with MAC. Average age? 52.8 years. They’re not so different, except in the MAC group, we’ve got a few more people who love their food, a little bit more, you know, obese.
With MAC, we’re using simple nasal cannulas, and we only had to switch to general anesthesia once – that’s efficiency. In the AA group, we’re using laryngeal masks most of the time, but sometimes we need the endotracheal tube.
And the results – they’re incredible. MAC is faster, by 20 minutes for anesthesia and 15 minutes for surgery. We’re saving time, we’re doing it better. No tachycardia, no desaturation, no airway issues like in the AA group. And the ICU stay? The hemoglobin levels? No difference, no problem.
In conclusion, both techniques are safe, they’re effective, they’re top-notch for brain tumor surgery when the patient is awake. We’re doing amazing work here, folks, really amazing.
