Ho-ho-ho! Gather ’round, my merry friends, for I have a tale that’s hot off the press—or should I say, straight from the oven? It’s about the hardworking elves, not the ones from my workshop, but those who toil in bakeries, kitchens, and laundries, where the heat is not from the cozy fireplaces but from appliances that could roast more than chestnuts!
In a land not so far away, in Ilorin, Kwara State, some bright minds embarked on a quest to see how this sweltering environment affects the jolly folks who bake our bread and launder our festive attire. For three months, they studied 60 bakery workers, both lords and ladies, who had been braving the heat for over a year.
Using magical devices like the haematological analyzer (Sysmex-2000) and the Westergren method, they peered into the workers’ blood to see what stories it told. And oh, what stories they were! The workers’ ESR, a measure of inflammation, was as low as the chances of a white Christmas in the tropics, while their red blood cells were as plentiful as the gifts in my sleigh. Their white blood cells, too, were more numerous than reindeer on my rooftop.
The conclusion, my dear friends, was as clear as the star atop the Christmas tree: working in the heat is no winter wonderland for our bakery elves. It’s a tough job that can make their health go downhill faster than a sleigh on a snowy slope. So, let’s not forget to leave out some milk and cookies for these hardworking souls, and maybe a word or two to the powers that be, to create a workshop—err, workplace—that’s safe and sound, where health and happiness abound!
And with that, I must return to my own preparations, for there are toys to be made and reindeer to be fed. But remember, whether you’re kneading dough or checking lists twice, take care to stay cool and be nice! 🎅🍪🎄
