Listen up, folks!
We’ve got this incredible surgical technique, Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion, TLIF for short. It’s huge, it’s used everywhere. Now, we’ve been using these static cages for a while, but let me tell you, we’ve got something better now. We’ve got these uniplanar expandable cages (UECs), and even more, we’ve got the bi-planar expandable cages (BECs). These BECs, they’re supposed to be fantastic, really top-notch, supposed to cut down on problems after surgery.
But here’s the deal, BECs are the new kids on the block, and we haven’t really put them head-to-head with UECs yet. So, we did this big, beautiful systematic review, totally PRISMA-compliant, looking at all the reports out there. We wanted to see everything – how often the cages sank into the bone, how well they fused, back pain, leg pain, you name it.
We did a meta-analysis, very sophisticated stuff, and we checked for bias with this ROBINS-I tool – very thorough. We found 15 studies, and only 3 talked about BECs. Can you believe it? No direct comparisons, but we did find something interesting. There’s a statistically significant difference in fusion rates – BECs might actually be better. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we need more studies, more direct comparisons.
Everything else? No big differences. But I’m telling you, when we get more data, it’s going to be huge. We’re going to figure out which cage is the absolute best. Stay tuned!
