Listen up, folks!

We’ve got something huge to talk about. It’s about people with epilepsy, and let me tell you, they’re facing some serious risks when it comes to dying in ways that are, frankly, not common. We’re talking about the kind of deaths that make you go, “What happened here?” And yes, that includes the big, bad SUDEP – sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

So, we did this massive study, okay? We looked at 5,291 cases where someone died, and nobody could explain it right away. We used this fancy thing called a plane CT, and we even checked their blood for troponin T, which is a heart thing, believe me.

Now, get this: 132 patients had epilepsy. That’s 2.6%, folks. And the other 97.4%? No epilepsy. When we talk about causes of death, cerebrovascular disease was lower in the epilepsy group. But drowning? It was double – 9.1% versus 4.4%. And a lot of times, we couldn’t even pin down why they died. It was a mystery in 78% of epilepsy cases!

And here’s something else: troponin T levels. They were up there in the epilepsy group without any heart disease history. We’re talking 37.9% versus 31.1%. When we found these people, a lot of them were face down, and half of them were in their bedrooms.

But wait, there’s more. 12% of these folks weren’t even on any seizure meds, and almost 30% were juggling multiple meds. Can you believe it?

So, what’s the bottom line? People with epilepsy are dying in ways that are not only unusual but also often unexplained. And we see signs that their hearts might be involved. We’ve got to figure this out, and we’ve got to do it fast.

That’s the story, and it’s a big one. We’re going to keep looking into it, and we’re going to find answers. Because that’s what we do – we find answers.
