Non-Obstetric Maternal Mortality Trends by Race in the United States.
Huang et al., Matern Child Health J 2023
DOI: 10.1007/s10995-023-03862-7
Listen up, folks!
We’ve got a situation here, and it’s huge. We’re talking about mothers, the most important people, right? They’re dying, and not just from childbirth – no, no – from things like car accidents, overdoses, even homicides and suicides. It’s a big deal, believe me.
So, we did this massive study, the biggest, with over 80 million births in the US. And guess what we found? A whopping 34.5% of maternal deaths weren’t even related to giving birth. That’s right, and the numbers are through the roof for American Indian women – they’re at the top of the risk chart!
And it’s not getting better; it’s getting worse, especially for Black and American Indian women. We’re seeing more of these tragedies every year. It’s unacceptable, and we need to do something about it.
What we need are smart, targeted interventions. We’ve got to focus on these non-obstetric causes and really help out American Indian women. They deserve it. We’re going to make maternal health great again, and we’re going to do it by tackling these issues head-on. It’s going to be fantastic.
