Study Protocol for TMS Targeting Methods in MDD

New Information: A protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) is presented to compare the efficacies of three different transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) targeting methods for treating major depressive disorder (MDD).

Importance: This study aims to clarify whether the ‘5 cm’ method, the F3 method, or the neuro-navigational method is more effective for TMS treatment in MDD, which is currently uncertain.

Contribution to Literature: The review will synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials to assess the efficacy and acceptability of TMS using these targeting methods.

Methodology: The review will include studies published in English or Chinese by May 2023, sourced from multiple databases. Included trials must compare active TMS using any of the three methods against sham treatment or each other, with a minimum of 10 high-frequency TMS sessions over the lDLPFC. The primary outcome is the reduction in depression rating scale scores, while the secondary outcome is the dropout rate. Analyses will be conducted using Stata, and the surface under the cumulative ranking curve will be used to rank the methods.

Publication: Results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, and no ethics approval is required for this review.
