Ho ho ho! Gather ’round, my dear friends, for I have a tale to tell—a tale of a land where the jingle of sleigh bells is often drowned out by the bustling crowds, a land known as India. In this vast expanse, where the population grows faster than my list of who’s naughty or nice, the good folks have faced a pickle as sour as a batch of spoiled eggnog. You see, the number of government workshops—err, I mean, healthcare institutes—offering top-notch care at prices even a humble elf could afford, well, they just couldn’t keep up with the demand.

But lo and behold, like the star atop the Christmas tree, a beacon of hope shone bright! Inspired by the premier workshop of the land, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, six new institutes sprang up in 2012, much like my reindeer leaping into the night sky. And within these hallowed halls, a particular department of neurosurgery, as magical as the workshop where toys come to life, began its journey at the AIIMS in Jodhpur in the merry month of August 2017.

Now, let’s peek into Santa’s ledger and see what they’ve accomplished, shall we? In the beginning, they welcomed a modest gathering—400 outpatients and 79 inpatients, with a mere 59 surgeries performed. But oh, how they’ve grown! By 2022, they were bustling with 11,144 outpatients and 1,624 inpatients, and the surgeons, as busy as elves on Christmas Eve, performed 597 routine and 311 emergency procedures. With seven faculty members, they now tackle the most intricate of surgeries, from the skull base to the craniovertebral junction, with the precision of toy soldiers marching in unison.

And would you believe it? These hardworking souls have not only mended brains but also crafted knowledge, with 134 publications and 8 patents to their name—gifts to the world, wrapped in the ribbons of science.

So, as we sip our cocoa and nibble on cookies, let us take a moment to appreciate this tale. For the experiences of this one department, much like a well-followed recipe for gingerbread, could serve as a template and guide for others embarking on the noble quest of establishing new departments. And with that, I bid you a merry read, and to all, a good night!
