Listen up, folks! We’ve got a big issue with diabetes – it’s huge!

Diabetes, it’s like the third biggest troublemaker when it comes to sending people back to the hospital. And let me tell you, we’re not just talking about 30 days here, we’re looking at a whole year. We’ve done something really smart – we’ve been digging into the data, the best data, from the National University Hospital in Singapore. We’re talking about a lot of data, from 2008 to 2015, to figure out what’s going on with these readmissions.

Now, we’ve got some winners when it comes to predicting who’s going to come back to the hospital. If you’ve got peripheral vascular disease or renal disease, or if you’re living in Singapore, your chances are higher. And let’s not forget, the number of emergency visits, the pile of drugs people are taking, and how old they are – these are big, very significant predictors.

But here’s the deal, we didn’t just use any model. We used the zero-inflated negative binomial model, and it’s fantastic, really fantastic. It beat the other models – the Poisson, the zero-inflated Poisson, and the negative binomial. It’s like choosing the best hotel – you want luxury, you go with the best.

So, we’ve got these five patient characteristics and two comorbidities that are telling us who’s likely to be readmitted. And our model, the ZINB, it’s a winner. But, and I mean it, we’ve got to check it out in the real world before we roll it out big time.

Remember, we’re going to make diabetes readmissions lower again. It’s going to be great!
