Pharmacological Treatments of Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review Including a Network Meta-Analysis.

Listen up, folks, we’ve got a situation with Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) – it’s huge!
People are suffering from pain in their jaw muscles and joints, and let me tell you, over half of them are popping pills regularly. But here’s the thing – the experts, they don’t agree on the best drug to use. Can you believe it? No consensus!
So, we did something incredible, we did a systematic review and a network meta-analysis (NMA). We’re talking about the best scientific evidence out there to figure out how to treat this pain. We searched high and low, up until April 6, 2023, and found some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) – the gold standard of research!
Now, for the jaw muscles, we’ve got some good news. We’ve got evidence for treatments like wet needling with BTX-A, granisetron, and PRP, and muscle relaxants. They’re doing great things. And for the jaw joints, we’re looking at drugs like NSAIDs and steroids for inflammation, plus hyaluronic acid and dextrose.
But here’s the key – every patient is different. We’ve got to look at each person’s unique situation, their own causes of pain. And then, we hit them with a treatment strategy that’s as multifaceted as they are. It’s going to be tremendous!
Remember, we’re not just throwing pills at the problem. We’re using the best evidence, the highest quality, rated by tools like Cochrane and GRADE. We’re making treatment great again, one jaw at a time!
