Study Highlights Variability in Perioperative Management for Joint Replacement in Poland
A survey-based study involving 162 Polish medical centers has revealed significant variability in the perioperative management of patients undergoing elective total knee (TKA) and hip arthroplasty (THA). The study, which gathered responses from 93 orthopaedic and 112 anaesthesiology teams, found that an average of 7.2 (±3.5) laboratory tests are ordered prior to surgery. Notably, urinalysis is requested by 47% of orthopaedists and 20% of anaesthesiologists, while a CRP test is ordered by 53% of orthopaedists and 26% of anaesthesiologists.
Specialist consultations are also common, with 79% of orthopaedists referring patients for at least one, including dental (40%) and gynaecological (27%) consultations. Preoperative education is provided by 85% of orthopaedists, and preoperative rehabilitation is prescribed by 46%. Meanwhile, 56% of anaesthesiologists perform pre-anaesthetic evaluations upon hospital admission.
The study’s findings highlight a practice that exceeds the recommended scope of scientific societies, indicating a need for standardized Polish guidelines to improve patient safety and optimize healthcare costs. This study is important as it underscores the potential for enhanced consistency and efficiency in perioperative care for TKA and THA procedures.
